JonPaul McBride Chosen to Attend the 2018 Center for Financial Planning Diversity Summit
JonPaul McBride, Senior Client Services Associate at Daintree Advisors, was chosen to attend the 2018 Center for Financial Planning Diversity Summit. He was one of 300 thought leaders in financial planning who gathered in New York City to discuss building a more diverse financial planning profession, and to address the serious underrepresentation of blacks and Latinos (less than 3.5 percent of all CFP® practitioners) and of women (23% of all CFP® practitioners) in the profession.
At the Summit, participants shared stories of the challenges they faced in overcoming discrimination and pressures within the industry. They discussed the importance of developing innovation initiatives, including enlisting people in firms to collaborate on solutions (which has been shown to be more effective than the creation of further hiring quotas and rules).
Because many prospective Black and Latino students are not aware of career possibilities in financial services, summit participants were encouraged to raise awareness about the profession in their communities. The necessity of hiring diverse talent and of providing strong mentoring was also highlighted as an important initiative because research shows that mentoring programs are key to attracting diverse talent, and even more vital in retaining and promoting that talent.
At Daintree Advisors, we have seen the importance and benefit of a diverse team, and we are excited to be a part of the effort to create and share opportunities for a more diverse financial planning profession.
